A couple of smaller features that would be super nice to have!

  • Hi there, at this point I don't even touch my other scanners. I have a creality otter with wireless bridge, raptor, and metroX just collecting dust on my counter because the Three is just that good at what I want it to do.

However, there are a few more features I think would be nice.

    1. polygonal laso tool. Maybe I'm in the minority here, but I find a polygonal laso tool WAY more accurate. I do a lot of graphic and motion design and it's always been my go too as a professional designer.
    2. Invert selection too. I feel like I'm going crazy cause I swear it used to be in there but I'm not seeing it now. It would help just to clean things up. Maybe it can just be a shortcut or something?
    3. Navigation while selecting. Currently, at least to my knowledge, when you have the selection tools in use your perspective is fixed. Is there maybe a way to make it so we can orbit or zoom around the workspace by holding shift or ctrl or something and clicking?
    4. Section analysis. A tool to view a section of a point cloud would rock so much! I asked for an 'isolated data' removal tool last time, and while that seems really tricky to implement, a section analysis function would make removing erratn data a lot easier!
    5. Noise reduction. I know there is noise reduction currently in the software capture settings (Is there any documentation on how this works? I find I never know the best settings to keep these at), but maybe a took to help smooth out object surfaces after merging the pointcloud but before meshing could be nice? This one seems much harder to implement than the others. A smoothing algorithm would probably mess up nice sharp edges, but maybe it can be tuned specifically for large flat surfaces or for rounded shapes? Revopoint recently implemented a 'flattening' brush that is really nice, it just saves a step from having to go into blender or quicksurface afterwards to get a smoother finish.

All of these are really just nice-to-have features, but I feel like lots of people would agree that this would help really speed up their workflows! I can't express how much I love this scanner, I was on the fence about it so much I missed the kickstarter but It's really changed my workflow. If you don't have one (weird you'd be on this forum then) it's so worth it!

  • Hi Justin,

    Thanks for your feedback!

    1. Polygonal selection - We'll add this to the list, but it will be lowish priority since we already have rectangular and lasso selection tools.

    2. Invert selection  - This is pretty easy, we'll try to get it in one of the next couple of releases.

    3. Navigation while selecting - You can do this by pressing "c" (for camera) to move the scan, then "r" for rectangular selection, "s" for lasso selection.

    4. Section Analysis - This is not likely to happen any time soon, but you can achieve this by duplicating the scan you want to isolate, and then work on the duplication (and remember you can undo with ctrl-z if you make a mistake), then use the duplicate scan instead of the original in your mesh.

    5. Noise reduction - We're releasing a smoothing tool in the scans screen that can be applied to the scans, or to post-merge mesh. Regarding the noise reduction in the scan setup, we actually don't have the documention on that in there yet, we'll get that sorted out.

By the way, we just started a promotion where every month we're offering a chance to win one of three $25 Amazon gift cards for reviews on our website. Since you sound happy with your THREE, it would be awesome if you left a review. Right now there are only two new reviews this month so at least at the moment there's a really good chance of winning. :)

    Trevor.

  • Hi Justin,

We just released version 11 of the THREE software, and amongst it's many improvements are two of the features you asked for: invert selection, and smoothing!

    Trevor.

  • Hey Trevor, just plugged in my scanner and saw a few of the suggestions already implemented, you guys work fast! I appreciate the insight into the other suggestions as well, I will definitely be using those shortcuts to speed up my workflow.

  • @Trevor Townsend

After updating to the new version I'm having issues with merging scans, somehow it's deleting data in this strange striped pattern? Not sure what could be causing this, it's happened with both auto aligned and manually point picked merge operations.

  • Hi Justin, I'm not sure what's happening there. Please contact support through the THREE software, which will include the log file. We might need to see this project as well, but we'll take a look at the log files first.

  • Hi Justin, what does the scan look like with the texturing opacity at zero? That may just be an artifact of having not yet done the texture processing.
