Metrology Grade Accuracy, School Grade Simplicity
Matter and Form Inc. has been building 3D scanners and software for 10+ years. We know how to make complicated processes easy to understand. THREE is accurate like the best metrology scanners, but easy enough that a middle school student can get up and running in a few minutes.
Standalone Self-Computing
THREE runs its own web server and WIFI hotspot, and stores your scan projects internally! No cloud service or internet needed.
Get started in 2 simple steps:
- Connect THREE to your network with WIFI or Ethernet.
- Open your web browser and connect to "http://matterandform.local"
Now you're Scanning with THREE!
Scan Any Size
Most 3D scanners have a restricted object capture range, so you need one scanner for small objects, and a second scanner for large objects, and maybe even a third scanner for medium-sized objects. Not anymore. THREE gives you powerful projected light and focusable, high-resolution cameras, so you can rely on THREE for practically any scanning job, regardless of the object size.
Whether you're reverse-engineering a discontinued mechanical component, modifying a gaming miniature, capturing a sculpture, or creating content for your 3D printer, THREE is your versatile 3D scanning tool.
Awesome Color Capture
Skip the scan spray!
THREE’s breakthrough ChromaSpec™ algorithm uses the full color spectrum to detect and process different-colored areas of the object. Instead of messing around trying to get the settings just right, THREE lets you quickly get the scan you need and keep your project moving forward.
Full API
Your creative possibilities are endless! Control THREE remotely from your computer, or a robot, or a robotic arm, or perhaps combine it with Home Assistant.
THREE is (as far as we know) the ONLY 3D scanner in the world that is an edge computing device. Create your own 3D and 2D computer vision and 3D scanning programs and THREE will run them for you!
Supported with open source projects and powerful plugins like JupyterLab and Python, THREE is your opportunity to get into the expanding field of 2D and 3D computer vision and automation systems.
Whether you're a vision professional or a student taking your first steps in machine vision, THREE is an amazing tool with the support you need.
A Revolutionary Software Approach
THREE's software is built-in. There's nothing to install on your computer, and you don't need a powerful gaming computer either. THREE is a pleasure to use with an iPad, Linux, Chromebook, Windows, IOS, MacOS, Android...
Whatever you have that runs a modern web browser will run THREE!

FAQ
How does THREE work?
THREE features focusable 13 MP Sony optical sensors, a built-in CPU and GPU, a state-of-the-art DLP projector, and WIFI/ethernet connectivity.
Extraordinary, built-in software takes full advantage of THREE's hardware to capture and process 33 micron scans in about 20 seconds.
THREE's unique focusing cameras accurately "see" everything- so you get incredible scan results from the tiny embossing on a coin all the way to a whole car engine.
How is THREE different from other 3D scanners?
Unlike most scanners, THREE is a standalone, self-computing 3D scanner with built-in software that does all the scanning, processing and storage on the device itself. This means it can work with any computer, Chromebook, iPad or tablet.
THREE also gives you the highest-quality scan results across a truly extraordinary range of object sizes, where most other scanners are heavily limited in size and distance.
What kind of computer do I need to use THREE?
THREE is the only 3D scanner that will work with ANY computer, iPad, Mac, tablet, Windows, Chromebook or Linux. All you need is a web browser, because THREE's standalone, self-computing software is built-in.
3D scanning with THREE means no software to install, no yearly software licensing fee, no SAAS, no cloud, no expensive video card and no expensive computer required, and no worries that an operating system update will break everything.
With THREE, you're ALWAYS ready to scan.
Why is THREE more expensive than some other 3D Scanners?
Cheap 3D scanners come with poorly written software that makes it difficult and frustrating to scan. THREE is built from the ground up to be powerful and easy to use, and is featured in professional labs and public schools around the world.
Cheap 3D scanners lack precision and accuracy. THREE can capture details as small as the embossing on a coin.
Cheap 3D scanners need expensive computers just to work. THREE is a stand alone device that can use the computer or tablet you already own.
What are THREE's scan speed, resolution, & scan distance?
Capture time: 4 seconds.
Processing time: 10-15 seconds.
Projector frame rate: 60 fps.
Scan object distance to camera: 220 mm to 700 mm (8.66 inches to 27.56 inches).
Resolution: 37 microns @ 220 mm, 65 microns @ 400 mm, 114 microns @ 700mm.
Z-accuracy: 33 microns @ 220 mm, 150 microns @ 400 mm, 400 microns @ 700 mm.
Minimum capturable feature size: 0.2 mm (0.0078 in).
Maximum capturable object size: 2 m cubed (70 cubic feet)
Isn’t blue light the best? How does ChromaSpec™ work?
Contrary to popular belief, blue light doesn’t automagically deliver higher-quality scans. Blue light scanners struggle to capture certain colors, so scanning spray is almost always required.
THREE’s breakthrough ChromaSpec algorithm uses the full color spectrum to detect and process different-colored areas of the object.
With THREE, most of the time you won’t need to worry about scan sprays. Instead of messing around, trying to get the settings just right, THREE lets you quickly get the scan you need, and keep your project moving forward.
Tell me about the API. Does that cost more?
THREE has a free and included built-in API and on-board processing, so if you want to get into some really cool vision system hacking, it’s ready to go.
Example projects and documentation are available in Github.
3D scanning APIs are really expensive, but when you get THREE, the API is included and it will always be up-to-date!
