Hey guys, I figured I'd start a running thread for this project and update it every time I complete a new scan. My dad gave me an old electric screwdriver that no longer worked so I figured I'd take it apart, scan all the pieces, and reassemble it in 3D. It has a lock switch in the middle that allows it to change the angle of the handle, so that made it interesting to me.
I first scanned the whole thing together in low res so I had a reference base and so I could match up the exterior cylindrical pieces that are normally difficult to align. Once I had this base, I took it apart and have started the process. First, here's that low res base:

The spring is the only thing that I couldn't scan because it was just too darn small.

@Jordan Cain I have the same challenges when working with largely flat items!
Noted on the alignment idea guys. I was thinking something similar the other day when scanning an engagement ring. Let us see what we can do.
Just a quick update: I'm still alive, but life stuff happened and I had to step away from my scanning endeavors. Hoping I can get back to this in a couple months!
Finally back on this. Updated my scanner and the first thing I did was try to re-align one of the projects that was previously unalignable. I don't know what you guys did, but I had NONE of the problems I had before and was able to get it all aligned in 15 minutes. And here are the results.



Damn that looks amazing! We did make some software updates to alignment over the last few releases. These alignment updates also obviate the need for additional planar geometry in the scans of small items. You can scan an engagement ring by itself and the alignment is excellent!
I noticed! I was able to align the circuit board without a problem too. Fantastic work on getting that sorted! This is really exciting 😁
